Detailed botanical survey

Certain wild plants and natural habitats are afforded legal protection under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and by the Habitat Regulations 1994, or recognition in the planning system as being material considerations through being listed as priorities for conservation in the UK Biodiversity Action Plan.

For sites where an ecological scoping survey identifies that more information is required, a more detailed botanical survey can be undertaken, which will identify any protected or notable plant species or habitats within a site. This type of survey can also identify those habitats within a site that are of particular ecological value, and categorise them according to the National Vegetation Classification (NVC). Habitats that can be surveyed and mapped in this manner include:

  • Hedgerows
  • Grasslands
  • Heathlands
  • Woodlands
  • Wetland
  • River corridors
  • Estuaries
